[This article, "Time for fruit farmers to reap", is about a Gates Foundation grant to Technoserve to produce fruit for Coca-Cola to use in fruit and energy drinks.]
"TechnoServe, a non-governmental organisation that helps farmers find markets, has received a grant of $7.5 million (Sh562.5 million) from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, $3 million (Sh225 million) from Coca-Cola Company and $1 million (Sh75 million) from Coca-Cola Sabco for the four-year project.http://www.nation.co.ke/business/news/-/1006/847998/-/item/0/-/53691mz/-/index.html
In addition to boosting farmers by doubling their incomes, attaining market leadership in this fast-growing segment is a major goal for the Coca-Cola system. Kenya’s burgeoning middle class and urban population has provided an ever- growing market for such products.
“We recognise that Kenya has a high youth population and a well-travelled middle class that demands health drinks,” said Coca-Cola central strategic marketing manager (Stills) Lionel Marumahoko."
